Pythagoras led a school that explored patterns in numbers, shapes and music.
Pythagoras worked in Greece during the Ancient era. This was long before modern laboratories, printing or electronic instruments, so knowledge grew through observation, calculation, teaching and carefully copied texts.
Working in mathematics, Pythagoras looked for structures that could be expressed clearly and used again. Turning a difficult idea into an organised method allowed later learners and researchers to build from the same starting point.
