Why Gerardus Mercator matters
Mercator designed a map projection on which compass directions appear as straight lines.
Gerardus Mercator worked in Flanders during the Renaissance era. This was a period when artists, navigators, physicians and instrument makers were examining nature with renewed attention to measurement and direct observation.
Questions in cartography often require connecting small local observations with events happening across enormous distances or spans of time. Gerardus Mercator helped make that connection measurable and understandable.

Gerardus Mercator's central contribution was the Mercator map projection.

His projection helps navigation but greatly enlarges regions near the poles.
