Why Eratosthenes matters
Eratosthenes compared noon shadows in two cities to calculate the size of Earth with remarkable accuracy.
Eratosthenes worked in Egypt during the Ancient era. This was long before modern laboratories, printing or electronic instruments, so knowledge grew through observation, calculation, teaching and carefully copied texts.
Questions in geography and astronomy often require connecting small local observations with events happening across enormous distances or spans of time. Eratosthenes helped make that connection measurable and understandable.

Eratosthenes' central contribution was estimating Earth's circumference.
The discovery turned observations of the sky or Earth into evidence about a much larger system. Measurements, maps, specimens or mathematical models made changes across distance and time easier to recognise.
Why it still matters: Today's observatories, satellites, field surveys and computer models continue to ask larger versions of the same questions. Eratosthenes's work is one chapter in that continuing story rather than the final word.
He made his calculation using geometry, sunlight and the distance between Alexandria and Syene.
